What’s the difference between membership and participation?

Membership and participation are two separate things at Honor Society®.

  • Membership is free and establishes your status as an Honor Society® member.

  • Participation refers to optional paid participation levels that add tools, services, or benefits.

Understanding this distinction helps explain billing, upgrades, cancellations, and access to opportunities.

Definition

Membership establishes belonging. Participation reflects optional engagement.
Honor Society membership is free and ongoing. Participation levels are optional and can be added, changed, or removed without affecting membership.

Membership and participation are separate.

What is Honor Society membership?

Membership means you are officially part of Honor Society®.

Membership:

  • Is free

  • Does not expire

  • Is not tied to payment, enrollment status, or activity

  • Continues unless you choose to close your account or it is closed for policy-related reasons

All members begin as members automatically when they join.

What is participation?

Participation refers to optional participation levels (such as Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Signature).

Participation levels:

  • Are optional and paid

  • Add tools, services, benefits, or recognition

  • Are tied to billing periods

  • Can be upgraded, downgraded, or canceled at any time

Participation levels do not create membership.

Does participation affect membership status?

No.

Participation:

  • Does not create membership

  • Does not replace membership

  • Does not determine how long membership lasts

Membership continues regardless of participation choices.

What happens if I never choose a participation level?

Nothing changes.

If you never choose a participation level:

  • You remain a full Honor Society® member

  • Your membership stays active

  • You continue to receive communications and opportunities available to members

Many members choose not to add a participation level.

What happens if I stop participating or cancel a participation level?

If you cancel, downgrade, or allow a participation level to end:

  • Paid participation benefits end at the conclusion of the billing period

  • Your account continues at the free Basic level

  • Your Honor Society® membership remains active

Stopping participation does not cancel membership.

Does participation affect scholarship opportunities?

No.

As long as your membership is active:

  • You have full access to the Honor Society scholarships platform and available opportunities

  • Participation levels do not affect scholarship access

Scholarship eligibility and selection are based on each scholarship’s stated criteria, not on participation level.

Why does Honor Society separate membership and participation?

Honor Society separates membership from participation to provide flexibility and choice.

This allows members to:

  • Join and remain members without payment

  • Decide later whether optional participation benefits are useful

  • Change participation levels without losing membership
